While reading "As Others See us", I found the facts that she discovered to be interesting, yet unfortunately predictable. When one of the teachers asked the students to include international students into their study groups, the international students ended up forming their own group. I agree that it seems more difficult for international students to make friends that seem interested in them, which is completely different from where they are from. I have many African American students in my graduation class at my high school, now that I think about it I notice that at lunch they were always sitting together at lunch, at their own table. They obviously had other friends that they talked to through out school, but when they had the chance they all stuck together. I think maybe they do this because they feel that they have more in common then they do with other students. Right now we currently have three foreign exchange students. I often find them in the halls together talking, which once again I think is because they have more in common. I think that they feel more secure, and they all know that they are experiencing the same thing so they keep one another close by. While reading, I also found it very interesting that she mentioned the international students saw a lot more individualism and independence in our country. This had me question why this would be so much different then other countries.
As I was reading "The Mind at Work" about waitressing, I found it quite interesting and very true. I have had experience waitressing in the past, and it honestly does take ALOT of good memory. It is important to know where each person is and what they ordered, even if they move a chair to the side or switch locations, just as explained in this chapter. I also enjoyed reading the part about how the workers comment on the satisfaction that they feel when they perform well under stress. I as well do a lot better at tasks when I am stressed. As a waitress you eventually become used to all the routines, the skillful response, and memory. I thought Rose was overall educated because she had the hard and dedicated skills that were needed to be a waitress. She had good relationships, sociable, and had all the skills needed such as memorization and dedication. With success and effort as a waitress, Rose is well educated in my eyes.
